Conscious Will and the Unconscious Mind

Ort: Campus Essen, Universitätsstraße 2, 45141 Essen, Room: S05 T03 B94
Beginn: 28.06.2019 09:30
Ende: 28.06.2019 16:30

The workshop discusses whether unconscious influences, like implicit biases, present a threat to free, responsible agency. While we are acting and deciding, a number of unconscious mental states influence what we are about to do. Some of them, like implicit biases, can even stand in contradiction with our explicit beliefs. Thus, due to these biases we sometimes act in a way that we consciously disagree with. Are we therefore less free in what we do? Should such actions be excused? And what, if any, role does consciousness play for these questions?

The workshop is organized by Astrid Schomäcker and Neil Roughley. It is free and open to the public. If you are interested in attending, please register via e-mail to astrid.schomaecker@uni-due.de until June 24, 2019.
