Robyn Arianrhod’s book Seduced by Logic. Émilie Du Châtelet, Mary Somerville and the Newtonian Revolution (2012) integrates both women, Émilie Du Châtelet (1706–1749) and Mary Somerville (1780–1872), into the history of science by combining biographical narrative with expository evaluations of key aspects of their work. In this course, we want to focus on Du Châtelet’s interest in the nature of light and the meaning of energy, and then look briefly at how these ideas had developed a century later in Somerville’s time. Robyn Arianrhod will present a short overview of her text, and Andrea Reichenberger will give commentaries and lead the discussion. Everyone who is interested in the evolution of some crucial scientific debates in the 18th and 19th centuries is welcome to participate.
