Wittgenstein and Hegel – Normativity and Rationality


 … The workshop ‘Wittgenstein and Hegel – Normativity and Rationality’ invites the submission of  abstracts . The workshop will explore Wittgenstein’s and Hegel’s understanding of rules and mind (Geist) in historical, logical and practical dimensions.

The conference will take place at the University of Zagreb (Croatia) on 9-11 September 2024.


Keynote speakers are: 

•     Hans-Johann Glock, University of Zurich, Switzerland

•     Elena Ficara, University of Paderborn, Germany



Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Understanding of norms (in Hegel and Wittgenstein)

• Authority and conformism

• Autonomy and customs

• Norms and meaning

• Normativity and language

• Logical necessity and normativity

• Rationality and normality

• Sociohistorical roots of rationality

• Pragmatic aspects of Wittgenstein’s and Hegel’s philosophy

• Laws of thought and rules of inference

• Logical space of reasons

• Logic and madness

We especially welcome contributions from underrepresented groups.



Submission guidelines:
Abstracts should not exceed 300 words and should clearly state the topic and the main idea of the proposed paper. Please also indicate how the topic relates to Hegel and/or Wittgenstein.

This event is part of a workshop series that has already taken place in various cities, including Dresden (2017), Prague (2019), Warsaw (2021), Barcelona (2022) and Vienna (2023). More information about previous events can be found on this website.

Publications:
We have produced various publications that document our work.
One of them is "Wittgenstein and Hegel: Reevaluation of Difference" by Mácha, Jakub, and Berg, Alexander, published by De Gruyter in 2019 (DOI: https://doi.org/10.1515/9783110572780). 
At the workshop, we plan to introduce and discuss another publication with De Gruyter, edited by Alexander Berg and Denys Kaidalov and titled "Wittgenstein and Classical German Philosophy – Logic, Language, Life", coming in October, 2024 (https://www.degruyter.com/document/isbn/9783110698442/html).
Furthermore, we intend to capture the further development of the discussions from these events in a subsequent publication.


Host and Institutional Support:
The University of Zagreb, our host, is the oldest university in Croatia, and among the oldest universities in south-eastern Europe. It has been the intellectual and cultural centre both throughout history and today in Croatia. University of Zagreb and Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences have a wealth of experience in organizing philosophical events, which is shown by the organization of regular, both local and international philosophical events on an annual basis.
