Summer School: Gendered Ageism in Health Care for Older Adults

Research Retreat for PhD students and Early Career Researchers

Gendered ageism refers to the intersectional discrimination based on age and gender, which significantly impacts the health and well-being of older adults. Despite growing awareness of gender and age-related biases in healthcare, the combined effect of these biases remains underexplored. This research retreat, which take place in Erlangen and will be jointly organised by the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg and the University of Heidelberg, aims to bridge this gap by fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue among early career scholars. The program will engage participants from Germany and Europe in a comprehensive analysis of the manifestations of gendered ageism in various healthcare settings, including mental health and palliative care. It will also explore strategies to mitigate the effects of this form of discrimination. By combining theoretical frameworks from feminist bioethics and practical approaches to healthcare equity, the program seeks to develop actionable insights and promote a more inclusive and just healthcare system for all older adults.

Participants: Early-career researchers in fields such as medical ethics, sociology, psychology, medicine, public health, gender studies, social work, and history.

Objectives:
1. To investigate the complex dynamics of gendered ageism in healthcare.
2. To analyze biases and marginalization mechanisms affecting older adults.
3. To foster interdisciplinary and international collaboration among early career scholars.
4. To produce insights contributing to the global discourse on gendered ageism.

Funding: Participants from Germany and Europe will be selected on the basis of a CfA and will receive funding to cover travel and accommodation costs, enabling diverse and inclusive participation regardless of financial or institutional backgrounds.

Call for Applications/Application Requirements: Send an abstract (max. 300 words) for a topic you would like to present at the retreat together with a short curriculum vitae to Elisabeth Langmann, Sandra Kurkowski and Nadia Primc (langmann.elisabeth@gmail.com, Sandra.kurkowski@uk-erlangen.de, Primc@uni-heidelberg.de), until 1th of August 2024. After consultation by a team of experts, up to 15 participants will receive invitations until 31st of August 2024. The abstracts will be distributed to all participants in advance for preparation of the research retreat.
